Experts in DNS queries, we handle around 3 billion DNS requests each day through our turing platform.
With over 20 years’ experience in running one of the busiest and most successful internet registries in the world, Nominet is one of the leading authorities on DNS. We work with ICANN, IETF and law enforcement agencies.
Big events in turing’s history:
Nominet is born and takes over the management of the UK Domain Name Registry.
Nominet begins work on turing so that it can begin to forensically analyze the billions of DNS queries its servers handle per day.
turing discovers a critical flaw in 80% of the world’s DNS nameservers. Misused, this could shutdown DNS nameservers globally and render the majority of websites inaccessible with catastrophic consequences for the internet and wider global economy. Nominet works with nameserver vendors to quickly patch the flaw.
turing is used to detect and visualize Cutwail botnet activity in the UK namespace. Nominet works with law enforcement agencies to counter this and other harmful botnets.
turing detects and visualizes an ever increasing number of domain names created via Domain Generation Algorithms (DGAs) from botnet activity.
Nominet launches turing V1.0 to the open market.
turing V1.2 launches. Its new dynamic event detection clearly identifies DDoS events in a large US ISP and the IP addresses and domains responsible. Botnet-infected machines on their internal network are also flagged.
turing detects a large amount of DNS tunneling at a major ISP. This tunneling is generated by users circumventing the ISP’s billing controls with a direct impact on the ISP revenue.
turing records the largest surge of DNS traffic in Nominet’s 20-year history. turing’s dynamic event detection quickly identifies this as spam email traffic from Asia and the Middle East.
